Gail Kendall – Exploring Hand Built Pottery: Form & Surface

August 14th – August 18th, 2017

Using structural coil-building and soft slab techniques, participants will construct a variety of pots, from simple straight-forward pieces to more complex forms.

Gail “loves making and using hand made pots!” In this workshop she will demonstrate the techniques she has developed for making a range of functional terra cotta pottery forms from cups, plates and bowls, to cake stands, tureens and teapots. Using structural coil-building and soft slab techniques, participants will construct a variety of pots, from simple straight-forward pieces to more complex forms. Also included will be demonstrations of handles, spouts, lugs and feet. Using white slip and sgraffito techniques, we will set up formats for future glazing. Illustrated lectures and discussions will provide information on low fire glazing and surface possibilities, as well as inspiration from historical and contemporary pottery. Dry work will be bisqued.

Following her formal education at the University of Michigan (BSD) and Eastern Michigan University (MFA), Gail Kendall spent ten years working as an independent studio artist in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1987 she accepted a position in the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she taught for 24 years. Gail has been a resident artist at c.r.e.t.a. Rome, Spode Fine China Works in England, Watershed Center for Ceramic Art, ME, The Archie Bray Foundation and Red Lodge Clay Center, MT and Anderson Ranch Art Center, CO. She exhibits nationally and her work has appeared in articles & books including Ceramics: Art and Perception, Neue Keramik, Emmanuel Cooper’s Contemporary Ceramics, and Masters: Earthenware by Lark Books.
