RESIDUE: IMAGES BY JOSHUA MICHAEL SCHREI
Joshua Michael Schrei, a Santa Fe-based teacher, photographer, and lifelong student of
the cosmologies of India, has spent many years exploring and documenting the rare
goddess traditions of the Indian subcontinent and has lectured on the subject around
the world. Inspired by the works of scholars like Sree Padma Holt, PhD – whose book
Vicissitudes of the Goddess examines the influence of village and tribal goddess
traditions on Hinduism as a whole – Schrei recently spent several months in India
exploring 41 of the most sacred goddess temples of the subcontinent and
photographing shrines and rituals at popular temples and in remote villages alike.
A photography exhibit from this vibrant journey – entitled ‘Residue’ – will be showing at
JFD Gallery, 1221 Flagman Way, during the month of June.
A reception for the artist will be held Friday, June 1st from 5:00pm – 7:00pm at the gallery.
