JESSIKA EDGAR EXHIBITION OPENING RECEPTION
Jessika Edgar is a ceramic artist whose pieces, while incorporating mixed media, always feature clay as the most prominent material. Her current exhibit at Santa Fe Clay features new work that directly references popular culture and contemporary fashion trends as a way of commenting on how we perceive mass media influences promoting the consumption of material goods. Using elements that might have been drawn from the world of the haute couture –– textiles, faux fur, beads and other adornments –– Edgar has created a series of lavish, hand-built ceramic pieces that shimmer with paradox. These glittering surfaces, laid over subtextual questions about gender, beauty and desire, result in nothing less than cognitive dissonance — the artist’s ultimate goal.
Exhibition runs through March 24, 2018
